US troop withdrawal from Germany sparks NATO tension

The United States will withdraw roughly 5,000 troops from Germany, a move the Pentagon says will be completed within the next six to twelve months. The decision comes amid growing tension between the Trump administration and European NATO members over the war in Iran, demands for higher European defence spending, and lingering resentment from a recent dispute over Greenland.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the pull‑out reflects a “thorough review of the Department’s force posture in Europe” and aligns with “theater requirements and conditions on the ground.” The United States currently stations more than 36,000 active‑duty personnel in Germany, the continent’s largest American military presence, supporting training, logistics and medical facilities such as the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Overall, about 80,000 U.S. troops are stationed across Europe, many of whom were deployed after the 2022 escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

President Donald Trump hinted that the 5,000‑troop figure could rise. “We’re going to cut way down, and we’re cutting a lot further than 5,000,” he said, adding that troops could also be withdrawn from Spain and Italy, which he described as “unhelpful” in the Iran war. Reuters reported that the United States also abandoned a Biden‑era plan to station a battalion equipped with long‑range Tomahawk missiles in Germany.

The announcement followed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s criticism of Washington’s handling of the Iran conflict, in which he claimed the United States “obviously has no strategy” and that the nation is being “humiliated by the Iranian leadership.” Trump responded by dismissing Merz’s comments, urging the chancellor to focus on ending the Russia‑Ukraine war and addressing Germany’s domestic challenges.

U.S. lawmakers expressed concern over the drawdown. The Republican chairs of the House and Senate Armed Services committees said the reduction warrants close scrutiny. An AP source suggested the U.S. military learned of the decision “in real time,” while the Pentagon maintained the move resulted from a structured, multi‑layered process involving European command officials.

European officials described the announcement as indicative of an “increasingly unpredictable and sometimes ‘schizophrenic’ dynamic,” noting the contrast between public statements of continued commitment by U.S. commanders in Europe and the administration’s sudden policy shift.

The troop withdrawal marks a significant adjustment to the U.S. European security posture and may shape future transatlantic defence cooperation, particularly as Washington and its allies navigate disagreements over the Iran war and broader strategic priorities.
