Nigeria: No Citizens Killed, No Property Lost in SA Protests

The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that no Nigerian nationals were killed and no Nigerian‑owned property was destroyed during the anti‑foreigner demonstrations that took place in several South African cities from 27 to 29 April 2026.

The statement was made by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu‑Ojukwu in a post on her official X account on Sunday. She said the government is closely monitoring the situation after protests erupted in Pretoria, Johannesburg and other urban centres. South African authorities described the demonstrations as largely peaceful, although police deployed tear‑gas in some locations to disperse crowds.

While the protests themselves did not result in Nigerian casualties, the minister confirmed two separate deaths of Nigerians that were not directly linked to the demonstrations. One individual died following an encounter with soldiers, and another was found dead after an alleged confrontation with metro police. Both cases are being classified as serious and unacceptable. Nigeria has engaged its High Commission in South Africa to investigate the incidents and pursue accountability.

In anticipation of further unrest, Minister Odumegwu‑Ojukwu warned that additional protests are expected between 4 and 8 May 2026. Nigeria has summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner and is intensifying diplomatic discussions to address security concerns and protect its citizens.

The minister also disclosed that approximately 130 Nigerians have already registered for voluntary evacuation back to Nigeria. The government is coordinating with South African authorities to facilitate safe departures for those who wish to leave.

These developments come amid a broader context of rising anti‑immigrant sentiment in southern Africa, which has prompted several African states to reassess the safety of their expatriate communities. Nigeria’s proactive diplomatic engagement underscores its commitment to safeguarding its nationals abroad and seeking redress for any violations of their rights.

Further updates are expected as investigations into the two deaths proceed and as South African security forces manage the scheduled protests in early May.
