AMVCA 2026: Sola Sobowale, Kanayo O. Kanayo wins Industry Merit Awards

Veteran Nigerian actors Kanayo O. Kanayo and Sola Sobowale were presented with the Industry Merit Award at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) on Saturday night. The ceremony, the 12th edition of the AMVCA, took place at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, Nigeria, and highlighted the contributors’ long‑standing impact on Nollywood.

The Industry Merit Award recognises individuals whose work has shaped the Nigerian film sector over several decades. Both Kanayo and Sobowale have enjoyed prolific careers, with the former known for his versatile performances in drama and comedy, and the latter celebrated for her roles as actress, director and producer. Their joint honour underscores the lasting influence of senior practitioners on the industry’s growth and global visibility.

During her acceptance speech, Sola Sobowale thanked the event organisers, fellow colleagues and her supporters. She also acknowledged her children, noting that their encouragement helped balance motherhood with her professional commitments. “I want to specially thank God Almighty for keeping me here today. I thank my children. Thank you to all my colleagues. I thank my fans because without you ‘Ko si Shola’ (there’s no Shola). It truly is an honour,” Sobowale said.

Kanayo O. Kanayo used his brief remarks to condemn recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, urging solidarity across African borders. He called for unity and respect for African migrants, stating that such incidents undermine the continent’s shared progress.

The AMVCA, organised by MultiChoice’s Africa Magic platform, continues to serve as a key showcase for African entertainment talent. By honouring veteran artists, the awards reinforce the importance of preserving cinematic heritage while encouraging emerging creators. The Industry Merit Award given to Kanayo and Sobowale not only celebrates their personal achievements but also highlights the broader narrative of Nollywood’s evolution into a major cultural and economic force across the continent.
