The remains of Ghanaian football player Christian Atsu, who died during the devastating earthquake in southern Turkey last month, have been laid to rest in Accra, the country’s capital.

He was one of the victims of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria on February 6.

The earthquake killed not less than 54,000 people in both countries.

He had gone missing following the collapse of an apartment building in Hatay but his body was later found under the rubble and flown back to Ghana.

The nation’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo and many other citizens of the country were present at his burial ceremony held at Ghana’s presidential villa, to pay their last respects.

Representatives from Ghana’s national team and Atsu’s Turkish club Hatayspor were also present.

The late footballer represented Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

He helped his team finish as runners-up at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, in which he also won Player of the Tournament and Goal of the Tournament.
