A Partner at KPMG Nigeria, Yemi Kale, has advocated increased deployment of technology for credible data gathering in the country.
Kale, who is a former Statistician-General at the National Bureau of Statistics, spoke at the 2023 edition of ‘Experiencing PR’, an annual conference organised by Nigerian Women in Public Relations.
According to a statement, the event brought together physical and virtual professional women, students, small and medium-scale business owners and start-ups.
While reacting to a question on how to ensure that data generated by both National Bureau of Statistics and other agencies were credible, Kale described technology as the most important tool to make this possible.
He said, “The most important thing is the use of technology. When technology is available it can be difficult to alter it because the data is transferred immediately to the head offices.”
He advised Nigerians to help ensure access to credible data by cooperating with the relevant government agencies.
According to him, “One of the problems back then was lack of cooperation, some businesses were afraid because they did not know what the purpose of the data was meant for.
“For instance, if I ask you how old you are, you might think that maybe the answer you supply might come with some incentives, so it is the information you provide that will be used; and that can have a negative effect on the data gathered.”
In her opening speech, the Founder, Nigerian Women in PR, Tolulope Olorundero, said women in PR was founded in 2019 as a move to stimulate knowledge for women practising public relations.
