Some gunmen invaded the Sankwab community of the Atyap Chiefdom in Zango‑Kataf Local Government Area, Kaduna State, on Saturday night, killing at least twenty villagers. The attackers, suspected to be Fulani militia, stormed the community around 10:00 p.m. in a commando‑like style, shooting indiscriminately, razing several houses and destroying property worth millions of naira.
Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the attack but did not disclose casualty figures. A source told our correspondent that the swift response of the military helped repel the attackers and prevent further loss of life. The commissioner later released a statement titled “Several lives lost in Runji village of Zangon Kataf LGA… El‑Rufai condemns killings,” indicating that the preliminary report informed the state government of numerous injuries and an unspecified number of houses burnt.
In the statement, the commissioner quoted Governor Nasir El‑Rufai, who condemned the renewed violence as unacceptable and unjustifiable. The governor expressed condolences to the families of the victims, prayed for the souls of the deceased, and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. He also pledged that the Kaduna State Government will update the public as soon as detailed reports are received from the security agencies.
