Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has not signed any law granting governors new retirement benefits, Commissioner for Information Charles Aniagwu clarified at a news conference in Asaba on Tuesday. Aniagwu was responding to allegations from certain quarters and opposition candidates who claimed that the Okowa administration had sold the state Liaison Office in Lagos.
He warned detractors to stop making unfounded accusations against the governor, emphasizing that the incumbent will remain focused on delivering his promises to the people until the end of his term. “They claimed the Lagos liaison office had been sold— to whom and for how much? You cannot sell state property; there is no buyer and no amount involved,” Aniagwu said. “We only engaged a developer to explore opportunities, resulting in a 10‑storey building approved by the Lagos government. The project will generate revenue for the state and will eventually house the liaison office, which is currently rented.”
Regarding the pension claim, Aniagwu stated, “We did not sign any law to give governors new pension benefits. Those who say we have passed a new law are lying. We challenge them to provide the date, location, and signatory of such a law.” He added that elections have concluded, with winners and losers, and urged the losers to pursue any grievances through the courts rather than maligning a governor who did not contest the elections with them.
Finally, Aniagwu thanked the people of Delta for their support in sustaining the developmental trajectory of the Okowa administration and for voting overwhelmingly for Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, which he said will deepen the state’s development.
