Suspected killer cop in Delta being held a man

The Delta State Police Command has announced the dismissal of Inspector Ubi Ebri who allegedly shot dead one Onyeka Ibe at a checkpoint on April 5, 2023.

Metro gathered that Inspector Ebri attached to the area command patrol team while on a stop and search duty along Ugbolu-Illah road on April 5, allegedly pulled trigger on Ibe and killed him instantly.

A statement by police spokesman DSP Bright Edafe said the Inspector was found culpable after an orderly room trial at the state headquarters.

Consequently, he was on Wednesday, April 19, arraigned before an Asaba Magistrate’s Court for murder trial.

The court ordered that the suspect be remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre and that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice and prosecution of the suspect.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has urged policemen “to uphold the tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties with respect to fundamental human rights of all citizens, in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).”

The police command stated that it hoped that the case of the dismissed Inspector would serve as a deterrent to other officers.

Editor’s Note
In our post on February 19, 2023, in a story ‘Woman burns self to death over failure to offset N70,000 loan’, we reported that a middle-aged woman, simply known as Mama Dada, set herself ablaze over her inability to pay back a loan of N70,000 she reportedly took from a microfinance bank, LAPO. We have since discovered that the microfinance bank referred to in the story was not LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited. We apologise to the LAPO Group for the error in the identification of the name of the said microfinance bank where the deceased took the loan. The mix-up in the name of the MFB is not deliberate.
