Karim Adeyemi essay competition to address sports, national unity

Nigerian-born German footballer, Karim Adeyemi.

Secondary school students in Oyo State will jostle for a cash prize of N300,000 in an essay competition, which the organisers said aimed at promoting national peace, unity and social inclusion through sports, particularly football.

The competition is organised by German professional footballer, Karim Adeyemi’s foundation.

The foundation secretary, Anu Oluyide, in a statement on Monday, said the event was being organised in commemoration of this year’s International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

“The competition, which is exclusive to secondary school students in Oyo State, encourages young people to reflect on the role of sport in promoting peace and development and to share their ideas on how to use sport to create positive change in their communities,” organisers said in the statement.

They noted that the deadline for submission of the essays would be May 15, 2023.

The 500-word essay is themed, ‘Uniting a Nation: The Role of Football in Promoting Social Inclusion and National Peace in Nigeria.’

“We understand that many students are currently out of school due to the ongoing term break, and we don’t want them to miss out on this opportunity to participate in the competition,” said KAF spokesperson, Olaolu Adedayo.

“By extending the deadline, we hope to give more students the chance to showcase their creativity and inspire others with their ideas on how to use sport to build better communities,” he added.

The foundation said its core value “is to put smiles on the faces of the less privileged through football, education, and general empowerment. Our mission is to create more prosperous communities with quality education, football, and opportunities while eliminating inequalities that promote poverty.”
