Building collapse: Lagos begins demolition in Banana Island

The Lagos government has commenced the demolition of illegal structures in Banana Island in highbrow Ikoyi.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) are carrying out the removal.

The exercise is led by LASBCA General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, and the Task Force Chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye,

Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, said the buildings contravened the Urban and Regional Planning Development Law (2019).

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered the demolition when he visited the site of the seven-storey building that collapsed on Banana Island.

Sanwo-Olu blamed the April 12 incident on developers who wanted to make quick money and incompetent state officials.

He also accused the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, and the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, of granting an extension of the shoreline.
