EPL: Erik ten Hag told not name Fernandes United captain

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has said that Bruno Fernandes cannot be Manchester United’s captain because he ‘is obviously not a leader.’

The Portuguese international is currently serving as the Red Devils’ de facto captain since Erik ten Hag took over as manager with club captain Harry Maguire spending more time on the bench.

Manchester United would be looking to name a new captain as Maguire is expected to leave the club this summer, and Fernandes appears to be the prime candidate.
Fernandes is arguably Man United’s best player for a couple of seasons now and has scored 11 goals and made 14 assists to help the club win the Carabao Cup as well as reach the verge of Champions League qualification and the FA Cup final.

Souness thinks Ten Hag should give the armband to someone else.
“Bruno Fernandes is obviously not a leader, it’s as plain as the nose on the end of your face,” he told William Hill.

“His attitude when they went 3-0 down at Liverpool was appalling. You certainly would not want to be in the trenches with him.”

He also added: “When you become a captain of a football team it’s about setting an example on the pitch and off it. To have a successful football club, you need good senior players and professionals.”
