Punch Respecting traditions

Respecting traditions

As we get older, we meet more people from different cultures, not just from around the world, but sometimes even from within our own country.

If we haven’t met many people whose cultures are very different from ours, it can be difficult to know how to respect and truly engage with their cultures.

We should not always discard African traditions while respecting foreign or colonial ones. Just because we have absorbed certain other cultures does not mean that we should discard our own.

When you want to criticise another person’s culture, simply reexamine your own in light of the same issues. Many people have discarded their culture; they may not even be aware that they have a culture in that area or on that subject, and they then assume that everyone else’s culture is barbaric.

The best thing to do is learn about other people’s cultures, avoid stereotyping, and try to find a way to accept and practise it correctly.
