Taraba State, Nigeria – At least 13 people have been reported dead in Karim-Lamido Local Government Council of Taraba State, following a crisis sparked by the state governor’s alleged creation of nine additional chiefdoms.
One of the communities affected by the crisis has witnessed the destruction of several houses.
Sources have reported that women and children make up the majority of those who have been displaced as a result of the crisis.
The state police command has confirmed the violence and casualties; however, they have disputed the number of reported deaths, claiming only two casualties so far.
Abdullahi Usman, the Police Public Relations Officer, has noted that three units of mobile policemen and several soldiers have been deployed to the areas affected by the crisis.
This crisis is not the first time the creation of chiefdoms has led to violence in Nigeria. However, in this instance, it has led to the loss of lives and the displacement of innocent civilians, including women and children.
The government must find sustainable ways to deal with inter-ethnic conflicts that arise due to the creation of traditional institutions. They must prioritize the security of all citizens and take necessary steps to ensure that civilians do not suffer because of political decisions.
