Troops neutralize terrorists and recover heavy weapons

In a renewed effort to combat terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin Region, troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have recorded significant success, neutralizing some terrorists and recovering various heavy weapons in the process.

The MNJTF spokesman, Lt. Col. Kamarudeen Adegoke, announced in a statement on Sunday that the success was recorded under “Operation Harbin Kunama,” which means “Scorpion Sting” – a codename for the onslaught against the terrorists.

Adegoke further stated that the operation has reduced the ability of the Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists to carry out their activities in the region, and attributed the success to the troops’ offensive posture and doggedness.

During the operation, which took place on May 11 in the Arege area, the terrorists attacked the troops, but their efforts were fruitless as the troops successfully repelled their attack. This led to the troops conducting an exploitation exercise which resulted in the recovery of a Dushka gun, Dushka Turrell and a burnt Gun truck. The troops also neutralized several terrorists in the encounter.

Additionally, during the clearance operation of the Ferondiya area in the Lake Chad Basin, troops successfully cleared terrorists’ hideouts and recovered various heavy weapons belonging to the terrorists.

The recovered items include two Gun trucks, two Anti-Aircraft guns, one RPG tube, two AK 47 rifles, one RPG bomb, and three Toyota Buffalo Gun truck tyres. In addition, the troops also found 387 rounds of 12.7mm, 440 rounds of 7.62mm x 54mm, and 364 rounds of 7.62mm x 50 mm ammunition.

The Nigerian military has continued to record successes in their fight against terrorism in the country, and this recent development is another positive step towards peace and security in the region.
