In a swift reaction to a video that went viral on social media, the Inspector-General of Police (IG), Usman Baba, has ordered the arrest of Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, for assaulting a police officer. According to the Force Headquarters, the incident was captured on video, and the IG has ordered a full investigation into the matter. The singer, on the other hand, claimed that the police officer attempted to kill him and his family.
The IG has directed the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, to arrest Seun Kuti and commence an investigation into the immediate and remote cause(s) of the assault, and subsequently prosecute the singer according to the law. In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IG noted that contempt and disrespect for symbols of authority would not be condoned.
In a statement by CSP Adejobi, “The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform. The IG has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect, accordingly.”
The statement also quoted the IG as saying that anyone found guilty of crimes against the force or any symbol of authority would be promptly brought to justice. Seun Kuti, who is Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti’s son, is yet to respond to the arrest order issued against him.
The incident is one of many in recent times, highlighting the strained relationship between Nigerian citizens and law enforcement personnel. The government has been urged to address the issue and ensure that the police are held accountable for their actions. The arrest order issued by the IG, Usman Baba, represents an attempt by the police force to demonstrate their commitment to upholding the law and promoting justice in Nigeria.
