Senator Goodswill Akpabio, the All Progressives Congress anointed candidate for 10th Senate President, has shared his vision for the Senate under his leadership. During a visit to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the State House, Marina, Lagos Island, Akpabio stated that he planned to deploy a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, and national approach to lawmaking. This approach would ensure that the incoming administration receives the necessary support to achieve its promises to the Nigerian people.
Akpabio also pledged that the Senate under his leadership would have complete control over its affairs without being confrontational with the executive. He emphasized that collaboration and support for the incoming administration of Tinubu would be his focus, and that as an anointed candidate, he planned to work with the Tinubu administration to make Nigeria a better country.
According to Akpabio, the Stability Group of the 10th Senate is made up of men and women of integrity. The team has senators-elect from different political backgrounds and parties, who are determined to ensure collaboration and support for the incoming administration of Tinubu. The APC candidate described Tinubu as “God’s own choice” for the country’s leadership and noted that his presidency is a nationalistic project that will bring positive development to Nigeria.
During the visit, Akpabio urged Sanwo-Olu to reach out to his governor-colleagues on behalf of the group, in order to pave the way for a smooth legislative transition in the National Assembly. Additionally, the former Senate minority leader representing Akwa Ibom North-west highlighted the importance of improving the Nigerian economy, and stated that he and his deputy would work with the Tinubu administration to bring legislations that will support development.
“We want him to replicate what has happened in Lagos in the last 24 years of democracy to cover the rest of the country. Particularly, we are challenged by the economy; we want to see serious improvement in the IGR of the nation to enable us repay our loan facilities. We want to see more foreign direct investment in the country. We will support him through favourable legislations to ensure Nigeria remains investment-friendly and a business destination in Africa,” Akpabio said.
It remains to be seen how the new administration will operate under Akpabio’s proposed leadership, and what impact it will have on Nigeria’s political landscape. However, with his multi-faceted approach to lawmaking, and his focus on collaboration and support for the Tinubu administration, Akpabio’s vision is one that may well resonate with many Nigerians.
