Chaos Erupts in Zimbabwean President’s Hometown, Meeting Ends Abruptly

A meeting meant to introduce Zanu PF’s parliamentary candidate to party supporters in Kwekwe Central, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s hometown, ended abruptly on Sunday. The crowd demanded primary elections for the constituency’s parliamentary candidate, prompting supporters to disrupt the meeting and sing revolutionary songs calling on President Mnangagwa to intervene in the matter. Energy Ncube, the party’s representative for the constituency, who was declared uncontested in the party’s primary elections, has faced some resistance from party structures regarding candidate imposition. Ncube’s opponent, Kandros Mugabe, withdrew from the race at the eleventh hour, further exacerbating the situation. The party’s Central Committee member, Daniel Mackenzie Ncube, stated that the issue was being addressed and was merely a “minor misunderstanding.”
