Seun Kuti, the popular Afrobeat musician, has turned himself in to the Lagos State Police Command following allegations that he assaulted a police officer. This news was released in a statement by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command.
According to Mr. Hundeyin, Seun Kuti surrendered to the police early on Monday with his lawyer and family representatives. He has been placed under arrest, in compliance with the law.
Further to this, Mr. Hundeyin assured the public that the ongoing investigation will be thorough, transparent, and carried out professionally. He thanked the public for their concern and reiterated that justice would prevail for all parties involved.
It may be recalled that on Saturday, the Inspector-General of Police, I-G Usman Baba, ordered the arrest of the popular musician on account of allegations that he assaulted a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. The Police Service Commission (PSC) also condemned the supposed assault and supported the I-G’s decision to promptly order Seun’s arrest and prosecution.
Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer hired as Seun Kuti’s legal representative, revealed that the musician reached out to him after the I-G ordered his immediate arrest. Mr. Falana confirmed that although his client has a history of engaging with the police, he has evidence that clears his name of the allegations leveled against him.
NAN reports that Seun Kuti has previously been involved in legal battles and has never been one to shy away from speaking his truth.
