Youths Demand Suspension of Mzuzu City Mayor Over Defilement Charges

Several youths in Mzuzu are calling for the suspension of the city mayor, Gift Desire Mkandawire, who is currently facing defilement charges. The Mzuzu Youth Anti-Corruption Movement has expressed disappointment that Mkandawire is still in office despite facing such serious allegations.

Rehema Patrick, the Public Relations Officer for the movement, stated that it is regrettable that the mayor is still working during a time when he should have been suspended to allow for investigations into the allegations against him. The movement’s sentiments come as Nyirenda was scheduled to attend the Mzuzu youth open day as the guest of honor.

When asked for comment on the matter, Mzuzu city council spokesperson McDonald Gondwe asserted that the movement has yet to communicate their concerns to the office officially and he could therefore not comment on the matter.

Mayor Mkandawire was granted bail on August 19th, 2022, after being accused of defiling a minor. Nevertheless, the Mzuzu Youth Anti-Corruption Movement feels that he should be suspended until the case is concluded.

This issue has led to heated discussions on social media, with many expressing their dissatisfaction with Mkandawire remaining in office while answering such serious charges. With the movement urging for a resolution, the ball is now in the court of Mzuzu city council to review the matter and take appropriate action.
