The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a breakthrough in its fight against drug-related activities in Kano State. On Monday night, the agency arrested 85 suspects in a nightclub following complaints from members of the host community about the drug-related activities in the club.

Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, the NDLEA Commander in Kano State, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Tuesday. According to him, the suspects comprise 55 males and 30 females who were caught with substances suspected to be Indian hemp. Idris-Ahmad also disclosed that some of the suspects attempted to escape arrest by jumping over the fence, while others tried to conceal themselves inside deep freezers but were all apprehended.

“The arrest of the suspects is a significant victory for the NDLEA in its fight against drug-related activities in Kano State,” Idris-Ahmad said. “Drug abuse and trafficking have serious negative consequences, not only on individuals but also on the society.’’

The spokesman for NDLEA in Kano State, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, signed the statement. He said that the suspects would be interrogated to identify the drug dealers among them before their arraignment. The drug users would also be referred to the appropriate unit for counseling.

Idris-Ahmad called on members of the public to report drug-related activities to the agency, stating that there would be no hiding place for drug dealers in the state.

The NDLEA is Nigeria’s premier drug law enforcement agency, established in 1989, to stop the influx of drugs that pose a great threat to the health and well-being of Nigerians. The agency also works to dismantle drug trafficking organizations. With the recent arrests, it is clear the NDLEA is determined to combat drug-related activities in Nigeria by all means necessary.
