On Tuesday, at the Body of Attorneys-General Conference held in Abuja, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami expressed his satisfaction over the achievements recorded by his ministry and fellow attorneys-general as the present government prepares to hand over to a new administration.

The body of Attorneys-General was formed as a platform to deliberate on pertinent legal issues affecting the nation and explore areas of mutual concern for the Attorney General of the Federation and Attorneys-General of the 36 states. Malami recounted the successes of the body as well as ongoing plans.

Malami expressed his emotional attachment to the conference while appreciating the contributions of each member. “For well over seven years now, I have been privileged to relate with and work together with an amazing crop of dedicated public servants and some of the best legal minds present here in this room,” he said.

Malami highlighted some significant achievements of his administration, which include modest gains in terms of reforms in the justice sector, law reforms through legislations, and judicial decisions which expounded Nigeria’s jurisprudence.

Furthermore, he disclosed that plans were underway to address critical issues such as pension for judicial officers, sharing of Stamp Duties collections, Value Added Tax, regulation of mining and gaming industries, policing, and security. He indicated that a sub-committee was set up at the last meeting in January 2023, and recommendations were provided.

“We should not shy away from offering our knowledge and wealth of experience in office to promote development in all spheres of our national life,” Malami advised the attorneys while urging both the Federal and State Governments to continue to dialogue on perceived issues of dispute for cross-fertilization of ideas.

With his detailed showcase of achievements and ongoing plans, Malami has once again demonstrated the strides made by the Nigerian government in the justice sector, preparing it for a smooth transition into a new administration.
