The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-Gen Yashua Dogara Ahmed, has advised corps members to abandon their expectations of an increase in their monthly allowances.

Addressing journalists at the NYSC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, Ahmed revealed that there is no plan in place to increase the corps members’ monthly stipend. Instead, he urged them to focus on acquiring new skills for personal development and financial empowerment.

The DG reminded corps members that their monthly stipend had been significantly increased by the present administration, from N19,500 to N33,000.

In his words, “That’s fair enough. I’ve told the corps members, pick a skill and learn. Even as government workers, I told them, salary is never enough for us. We always ask for an increment.”

He continued by stating that corps members who work hard and acquire skills could earn up to five times their current allowances when they secure employment after completing their service year, thereby urging them to focus on acquiring skills to increase their earning potential.

The Director-General’s advice aligns with the NYSC’s key objective of supporting Corp members and ensuring they are well-equipped for life after their service year.

Despite having no concrete plans for a monthly allowance increase, the NYSC is committed to its mandate of ensuring that corps members are equipped with the necessary skills to excel in their future endeavors.
