Over 2,000 local and international athletes are set to participate in the upcoming Onitsha City Marathon, scheduled to hold on the 30th of September. The Director of Onitsha Business School, Prof. Olusegun Sogbesan, disclosed this at a press conference in Onitsha, Anambra State. Professor Sogbesan stated that the event aims to showcase the significant potential of sports in Nigeria’s economic development.
To buttress the seriousness and commitment the organizers have put into the event, he disclosed that there is a total of $400,000 prize money set aside for victorious foreign contestants and a whopping ₦10 million earmarked for local athletes. The primary motive of the Marathon is to create awareness and reveal the enormous economic potential in the sports sector that is still largely untapped in Nigeria.
The event will feature five elite international athletes that rank within the top 300 in the world, and this year’s Marathon would attract over 20 foreign athletes from several countries. The organization aims to feature over 2,000 local athletes in a bid to encourage sports and fitness activities in the region. To cater for spectators who might be unable to view the race in person, the organizers have arranged up to 50 viewing centers across both Anambra and Delta states.
According to Professor Sogbesan, the Onitsha Business School has taken up the responsibility to give back to the community through this initiative. Their efforts aim to put Onitsha on the global map as a city with enormous talent in sports beyond being just a buying and selling hub.
In conclusion, this year’s Onitsha City Marathon promises to be an outstanding event. Onitsha City will host a series of both local and international athletes, who will compete for a substantial amount of prize money, highlighting the potential of sports in national development.
