The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has revealed its plan to monitor the progress of the 36 governor-elects in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a peer review mechanism. This was disclosed by its national Chairman, Yabagi Sani during a meeting with Nigeria’s development partners, including the Chinese Embassy, the International Republican Institute, and the National Planning Commission. The meeting centered around the need for international partners to empower political parties by aiding capacity building, improve governance, and facilitate accountability among political leaders.
According to Sani, the peer review mechanism would help ensure that the new executives were held accountable for their actions. It would also encourage the government to become more people-oriented in delivering their mandate to improve the welfare and security of the people. IPAC remains committed to implementing strategies for holding legislators accountable and ensuring they deliver on their mandate to make laws for the country.
Mr. Du Sheng, the Director of the Political Section of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, speaking on behalf of the development partners commended the Nigerian democratic process and pledged the embassy’s support for the peer review mechanism. He acknowledged the success of Nigerian democracy, which has continued for 24 consecutive years. He expressed his commitment to support IPAC’s efforts towards improving governance and empowering political parties.
The meeting ended with a commitment from all stakeholders to collaborate towards achieving the SDGs and improving governance in Nigeria.
IPAC’s effort towards improving governance through a peer review mechanism is commendable, as it provides necessary checks and balances for holding elected officials accountable for their actions. The support of international partners is also essential in promoting good governance in Nigeria, as capacity building remains critical for achieving the SDGs and mitigating developmental challenges.
