The recent gruesome killings in Kombun District, Mangu area of Plateau State have been met with widespread condemnation from concerned Nigerians. Reports reveal that more than 100 women and children were killed by invaders who razed houses, barns, foodstuffs, as well as seedlings. According to Theophilus Abuh Agada, who represented the social change movement, thousands of residents have been displaced from their homes.
Concerned Nigerians hold that it is senseless for innocent people to continually lose their lives in the recurring clashes between farmers and herders in Plateau State. Agada, in his statement, decried the barbaric act and lamented that it goes against the fundamental principles of humanity, peace, and justice that are held dear to our hearts as a nation. Furthermore, Agada emphasised that the loss of lives in this regard is an irreplaceable and unfortunate tragedy that not only affects the victims but also their families and the broader community.
The activist reminded the parties involved that no rationale could justify the recourse to violent means in their quest for justice. Speaking further, Agada underscored the importance of dialogue, understanding and compassion in resolving conflicts and building a harmonious society that values human life. Hence, he called on the authorities to investigate this crime and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.
Meanwhile, Honorable Solomon Bulus Maren has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct security agencies to protect his people. The lawmaker, who represents Mangu-Bokkos Federal Constituency in Plateau State, made the appeal during the week, emphasising that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) should provide relief materials to support the affected victims. According to Maren, the death toll had risen to over 200 before the recent attack, thus, intensifying their call for more robust measures to stem the tide.
