Anikulapo Takes Home Best Overall Movie at 2023 AMVCA

The Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award, (AMVCA), held its ninth edition on Saturday, and actor Kunle Afolayan’s 2022 masterpiece, ‘Anikulapo’, won the Overall Best Movie category. Afolayan and his crew were presented with the prestigious award at the ceremony.

During his acceptance speech, Afolayan thanked his mentor, Tunde Kelani, popularly known as Mainframe, cast & crew – Kunle Remi and co, MNET, and AMVCA. Afolayan also promised to come back next year.

While this is great news for everyone involved in the film-making process, it is worth noting that earlier this year, the Nigeria Oscars selection committee disqualified ‘Anikulapo’ from the nomination list of the 2023 Academy Awards, known as the Oscars. The committee’s decision was because the movie did not meet the eligibility criteria to represent Nigeria and compete in the International Feature Film category of the Oscars.

Kunle Afolayan, in a social media post, expressed his frustration at the committee’s verdict. However, winning the Overall Best Movie at AMVCA signifies that ‘Anikulapo’ is a masterpiece that deserves recognition.

Congratulations to Kunle Afolayan and the entire ‘Anikulapo’ crew for this deserved win at the AMVCA2023.
