The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has listed a nine-point agenda for the incoming administration as Nigeria prepares for the May 29 inauguration. Speaking during the first session of the 12th synod of Abuja Diocese, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, the Primate of the Anglican Church, congratulated the president-elect, governors-elect and members of the 10th National Assembly.
With only eight days to go before the new government takes office, Ndukuba commended Nigerians for their patriotism, especially the young people, for ushering in a new era of political participation in the country. He also urged the incoming administration to give due diligence to a wide range of issues, including the judiciary, security of lives and property, education, healthcare, economy, rule of law and law enforcement, all-inclusive government, addressing infrastructural neglect, and building a united and prosperous nation.
The Anglican Communion, according to Ndukuba, has interacted with political actors and believes that the government should prioritize Nigerian citizens’ security of lives and property by providing adequate protection for everyone. The Primate highlighted that the present state of insecurity and attacks on Christian Churches, communities, and citizens is worrisome.
In addition, the Church believes that education at all levels should be given top priority, as it is the best legacy that can be bequeathed to the youth. Ndukuba went on to explain that the healthcare delivery system needs improvement, so that the current medical tourism, used by top government functionaries and the privileged few, can be eradicated or at least reduced. Nigeria has the capacity to be a destination for health tourism.
“The provision of grants and loans for indigent people as a social safe-net for the citizens will offer every citizen the opportunity to contribute to the development of the country they call their own,” added Ndukuba.
Finally, the incoming administration should address the problem of infrastructural neglect and see to the full execution and completion of road construction projects, schools, and other basic infrastructure. They also emphasized that the development of key critical projects, such as the Ajaokuta Steel Industry, refineries, modular refineries, textile industries, and other Agro-based Industries, is essential for economic and technological growth.
As Nigeria prepares for a new administration, the Anglican Church has provided a well-planned agenda, targeting key issues that should be addressed to create a prosperous and united country. The government’s response to these demands now lies in the hands of the incoming administration.
