The opening match in Group D of the U-20 World Cup saw the Flying Eagles of Nigeria secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory against debutants, Dominican Republic. Though Nigeria is a two-time finalist in this competition, Ladan Bosso’s team struggled against the CONCACAF representatives in their quest to clinch their first title.

Edison Azcona drew first blood for the Caribbeans by converting a penalty in the 23rd minute. Despite Nigeria’s dominance, it took an own goal by Guillermo De Peno in response to level the scores before going into halftime.

In the second half, Nigeria maintained their possession but lacked the quality to threaten their opponents, with both sides struggling to find the back of the net. However, in the 71st minute, Samson Lawal capitalized on a poor back-pass by Israel Boatwright to give Nigeria the much-needed lead, securing three crucial points that placed them atop Group D.

The Dominican Republic was unable to find an equalizer, allowing Nigeria to celebrate the win. Both teams will play their next matches on Wednesday against Italy and Brazil respectively.

In another Group C match, Colombia came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Israel. Dor Turgeman scored Israel’s opener from the penalty spot, but Oscar Cortes leveled with an equalizer. Gustavo Puerta sealed a late comeback in the closing minutes of the match.
