The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has called on the Senate to investigate the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, over several allegations of corruption leveled against him. The NDYC expressed concern that the allegations, if true, would undermine the credibility and effectiveness of the commission.
The group stated that there must be a thorough investigation into the allegations, and the Senate must act swiftly to uncover the truth. The NDYC emphasized that the EFCC must operate with the highest standards of professionalism, and any allegations of misconduct or impropriety involving its leadership must be treated with utmost seriousness.
In a statement signed by Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, its National Coordinator, the NDYC called on Abdulrasheed Bawa to step aside from his position since the allegations have severely compromised his credibility as the head of the economic and financial crimes fighting unit. The group implored the Senate to prioritize the greater good of the Nigerian people over any undue influence or personal agenda that may jeopardize the EFCC’s fundamental role in combating corruption.
The group also urged the EFCC chairman to provide a comprehensive explanation of the sources of funds that facilitated his accommodation during the lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia. The NDYC noted reports on social media that Bawa had acquired six opulent rooms at the Hilton Hotel in Mecca and similarly resided at the Sheraton in Jeddah, with the bills for these hotel accommodations were estimated around $300,000.
The NDYC called for a fair, unbiased, and thorough investigation process, and a detailed account of the origin of the substantial funds. The group expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigerian Senate to conduct an independent and comprehensive investigation into these allegations.
In sum, it is crucial for the EFCC chairman to clarify the allegations of corruption. The Senate must also act in the best interest of the people by providing transparency, accountability, and justice in investigating the allegations of corruption against the EFCC chairman.
