Senator-elect, Barr. Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North senatorial zone, has urged the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to resign if he cannot put an end to the continuous extortion of innocent Nigerians at checkpoints. Speaking to newsmen after a thanksgiving service in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital, Nwaebonyi emphasized that the 10th National Assembly would summon the IGP to account for the fraudulent money collected by police officers at checkpoints across the country.

Nwaebonyi expressed his dismay over the persistent harassment, intimidation and brutality suffered by innocent Nigerians in the hands of police officers, particularly in the Abuja metropolis. He revealed that police officers demand large sums of money from motorists instead of properly searching them.

The senator-elect condemned the robbery of innocent Nigerians in broad daylight and called for an end to the illegal practice. He stated that the government should formalize the collection of road taxes if the police are to engage in it, and that the 10th National Assembly would address the situation.

Nwaebonyi stated that the IGP, Usman, would be summoned once the 10th National Assembly is inaugurated, adding that he has over a hundred video evidence of extortion. He gave the IGP an ultimatum of seven days to put an end to the practice, urging him to resign if he failed to do so.

He concluded by emphasizing that Nigerians must take responsibility for fixing the country and making it a better place to live in, adding that the right thing must be done.
