NEC and Political Parties Sign MOU to Boost Women’s Participation in Liberian Politics

In an effort to foster gender balance in the political landscape of Liberia, the National Elections Commission (NEC) and registered political parties and alliances have come together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU aims to increase women’s participation in the upcoming electoral process and was signed by the parties, committing to produce and adopt a Gender Policy that reflects the legal instruments supporting gender balance towards the 2023 general elections.

In keeping with the terms of the MoU, the political parties and NEC have agreed to ensure that no less than thirty percent (30%) of either gender (male and female) are on the list of candidates submitted to NEC during the Candidate Nomination period for the 2023 general elections. This move provides equal opportunity for both genders in the political race.

The MoU also seeks to create a conducive environment for female contestants and increase their active participation in political activities during the 2023 elections. The parties have committed to working collaboratively with women in the mobilization of resources for campaigning and other political purposes. Additionally, regular training programs on campaign strategies, leadership building skills, and how to effectively participate in politics will be organized. These programs are aimed to help women raise their political consciousness, build strong gender solidarity, and promote increased participation in politics.

Both the political parties and NEC have agreed to exercise any lawful rights and privileges aimed at enhancing gender balance and promoting increased women political participation and involvement in Liberian politics. The agreement also stipulates that the terms and conditions of the MoU are binding on the successors, representatives, and members of the political parties.

This Memorandum of Understanding is a step in the right direction for Liberia’s democracy and shows the importance of gender equality in all spheres of society. The NEC and political parties have demonstrated their commitment to providing a level playing field for both genders and promoting women’s active participation in the political arena.
