In a bid to bring an end to corruption at the National Land Commission (NLC), President William Ruto has instructed Kenya’s Ministry of Lands to take over the valuation of land from the NLC. “We want to make sure that every Kenyan is compensated fairly,” he said. Ruto voiced his concerns about the unfair and corrupt era at the Commission regarding land compensation. The President made the announcement during a prayer meeting at the Isiolo Boys High School. He was accompanied by notable figures such as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, and Governors Mohamud Ali (Marsabit) and Abdi Guyo (Isiolo), among others. Ruto called for unity among leaders to work together to tackle the challenges facing the country.
The President also mentioned that the government has launched specific programmes and policies aimed at creating jobs for young people and keeping them away from drug abuse and other vices. He stated that Kenya could not afford to be a “drunk nation” but, rather, a working nation.
Moreover, Gachugua suggested that the government would hold chiefs and police chiefs accountable for drug abuse within their regions. It remains unclear how quickly the Ministry of Lands will take over the valuation of land from the NLC. Meanwhile, Ruto and his team remain hopeful that the move will put a stop to corrupt practices at the Commission, ensuring every Kenyan is compensated reasonably.
