CAN Cautions Against Using the 10th NASS Leadership as a Divisive Tool

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State has warned against using the incoming leadership of the 10th National Assembly (NASS) as a divisive tool. In a statement on Monday in Kaduna, Rev. John Hayab, Chairman of CAN in Kaduna State, expressed concern over the ongoing developments in the leadership race and advised all interested parties not to divide Nigerians along ethnic, regional, or religious lines.

Hayab explained that CAN believes Nigeria’s elected representatives, both from the upper and lower chambers, are politically mature enough to choose competent leaders who will work towards making Nigeria great. He however decried the inciting messages currently going round which could create unnecessary tension and disunity among Nigerians.

The association has earlier advocated for fairness before the general elections and believes that a fair and just Nigeria is beneficial to the nation’s unity and growth. Therefore, CAN appeals to the political class to discontinue any move that can further widen the gap and work towards the nation’s unity and progress.

Hayab said the leaders that eventually emerge as the heads of the National Assembly must be lawmakers who would guide their colleagues to make laws that will benefit the entire nation and not just their constituencies. He emphasized that to attain a cohesive nation, the association will pray and work while speaking truth to power.

Hayab said, “CAN strongly appeals to the political class to consider the entire country as the most important constituency instead of promoting primordial sentiments.”
