The first Professor of Geology in Africa, Jamiu Mosobalaje Oyawoye, has passed away at the age of 96. His son, Prince Olukitibi Oyawoye, confirmed the news on Monday evening. Born on August 12, 1927, in Offa, Kwara state, Oyawoye held the position of a lecturer at the University of Ibadan from 1960 until 1977. It is an accomplishment that marks an era of academic achievement and dedication to community service. The academic was appointed as a professor at the age of 39 in 1966, becoming the first professor of geology in Africa. He was also the Chairman of the West Africa Examinations Council.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State expressed his condolences, describing the death of Africa’s first geology professor as a huge loss to the nation. The Governor said that Oyawoye’s death marked the end of an illustrious era of academic accomplishments, community service, and statesmanship.
The late Professor Oyawoye’s philanthropy and support for national development earned him high regard, particularly among the Offa people, Kwara State, and Nigeria at large. The Governor called him a statesman who wielded significant influence in public service, community development, and public administration.
The Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Chiefs, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, also expressed his condolences, describing late Oyawoye as a God-fearing scholar who lived his life with full dedication to the propagation of Islam. The Emir added that the deceased was a kind and loving man of integrity who raised the standard and promoted the image of Offa community, Kwara State, and Nigeria at large with outstanding scholarship and valuable mentoring of generations.
In a statement signed by his Principal Private Secretary, Olayinka Kadri, the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Eswuoye II, expressed deep condolences, saying that the deceased led a fulfilled life, which had left behind an enduring legacy that would inspire future generations. The Olofa urged everyone to reflect on Oyawoye’s life and achievements, honor his memory, and continue the work he began to make the world a better place.
