President Buhari Launches Dangote Refinery: A Milestone for Nigeria’s Economy

In a laudable feat for Nigeria’s economy, President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos’s Ibeju-Lekki area. This is a major milestone in the oil refining sector and will be a game-changer for the downstream petroleum product market in Africa, according to Femi Adesina, Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity.

With its output of 650,000 barrels per day, the refinery will significantly increase Nigeria’s ability to achieve self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products. The president further stated that the operations of the refinery would save Nigeria dollars spent on imports and increase export earnings.

Buhari expressed his delight at the capacity of the plant, which he says is an example of what can be achieved when entrepreneurs are encouraged and supported with an enabling business environment. He also praised the foresight of Aliko Dangote, the chairman of Dangote Group, in bringing the refinery to life.

During the refinery’s commissioning, Dangote revealed that they expect to export at least 40% of the plant’s capacity once fully operational. This will increase Nigeria’s international reputation for producing and exporting oil products, which, in turn, could increase Nigeria’s investment in oil production and distribution.

President Buhari’s belief in continuity in government was further emphasized as he reiterated his optimism for the continued success of the Nigerian economy in the hands of the next administration, stating that he is “happy to leave our economy in very competent hands.”

This significant milestone sets the pace for Nigeria to become more self-reliant and competitive in the global oil industry.
