Nigerian Afrobeat sensation, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has officially recognized Fela Kuti as the real originator of Afrobeat. In a recent interview with REAL 92.3 FM, Davido admitted that Afrobeat was a kind of African music that was pioneered by the late legend, Fela Kuti.
Davido praised Kuti for his creativity and contributions to the music genre, acknowledging that the late musician’s classic sound was the basis for what we now call Afrobeat. According to Davido, “Afrobeat is a certain kind of sound which was mostly done by Fela Kuti, a legend.”
Davido further revealed that London was one country that recognized new-generation African music. He mentioned an article that was published in one of the big newspapers in London, which questioned whether Afrobeat was here to stay or just a wave. According to Davido, the aftermath of the article led to everything being categorized under the Afrobeat genre.
The rise of new-generation African music, with Afrobeat at the forefront, has gained significant international recognition in recent years. Davido, who is known for his hits such as “Fall” and “If,” has been instrumental in promoting the genre across the world.
It is heartening to see Davido acknowledge the pioneer of Afrobeat, and this recognition can only lead to more appreciation for Fela Kuti’s immense contribution to African music.
