Supporters demand release of Seun Kuti as trial is adjourned in Lagos court

Supporters of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti gathered outside the Chief Magistrates Court in Yaba, Lagos State, on Monday to demand his release after his trial was adjourned to Wednesday. Seun Kuti had been arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland bridge, prompting the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to order his arrest.

The protesters, carrying posters reading “Free Seun Kuti” and “End police brutality”, demanded justice for the musician, who has been a vocal critic of the government. Meanwhile, a source who spoke anonymously to Punch claimed that the trial had been postponed due to the judge’s absence from the court.

Seun Kuti, the youngest son of legendary musician Fela Kuti, has continued his father’s legacy as a political activist through his music and social commentary. He has been a staunch advocate for human rights, particularly for the disenfranchised populations in Nigeria.

All eyes will be on Wednesday’s court hearing to see whether justice is served and whether Seun Kuti will be released.
