Police in Lilongwe, Malawi, have apprehended 23 individuals who were attempting to disrupt civil rights protests at Capital Hill, the seat of government. The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Institute (CDEDI) is holding the demonstrations to encourage the state attorney general, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda, to resign over their alleged inability to recover K750m ($996,000) of government funds that were paid for fertilisers that never arrived in Malawi. The police acted on information provided by CDEDI leader Sylvester Namiwa, subsequently stopping a minibus carrying the 23 individuals, who were being led by the ruling Malawi Congress Party cadre Agape Khombe. The group has been taken to the Lingadzi Police Station for further questioning.
