The Southeastern state governors have approved the naming of the Second Niger Bridge after the incumbent President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. This announcement was made known by both Bashir Ahmad, Buhari’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications, and Tolu Ogunlesi, Special Assistant on Digital/New Media, on Tuesday.

Ahmad revealed the new name of the bridge in a tweet, stating that it would now be called the “MUHAMMADU BUHARI SECOND NIGER BRIDGE,” and that it had been officially commissioned by the President. Ogunlesi later confirmed the decision via Twitter, saying that the Southeast governors agreed to the renaming of the bridge after consultations.

The construction of the Second Niger Bridge began during the administration of the former President, Goodluck Jonathan. The bridge, which connects the southeastern part of the country to the western region, is expected to enhance transportation and trade between the regions, as well as stimulate economic growth and development.

The decision to name the Second Niger Bridge after President Buhari has caused mixed reactions among Nigerians, with opinions on social media being divided. Some people commend the gesture as a way of recognizing and honoring the President who has provided immense support for infrastructural development in Nigeria, while others view it as a political move to curry favor and gain support.

Despite the controversy surrounding its renaming, it is hoped that the Second Niger Bridge will continue to serve as a vital link between regions, improve the socioeconomic landscape of Nigeria, and promote national unity and integration.
