WHO Report Proposes Bold New Path to Deliver Health for All

The WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All has released a landmark report for the first time, outlining a revolutionary new approach to reorient economies towards health for all. The Council was established by WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in November 2020 as a response to the pandemic, and the report comes after two years of feedback, combining finance, innovation, and capacity, ultimately advocating for a fresh economic view. The report was launched during the 76th World Health Assembly, calling on government officials, health officials, and economists alike to consider the recommendations and to design new economic principles and formations, advancing delivery of health for all. Focusing on four interconnected themes: value; finance; innovation; and capacity, it suggests that financing health should be viewed as a potential long-term investment instead of a short-term cost. It advocates for collective intelligence and suggests it is necessary to create an ecosystem prioritizing health by governments to support public sector capacity for health for all.
