Central Afghanistan was hit by flooding that led to the loss of six lives and left dozens of homes destroyed, according to local authorities who reported the incident on Wednesday. The spokesman for Ghor province’s Taliban governor, Abdul Wahid Hamas, stated that on Tuesday, a house in the town of Firozkoh was washed away, leading to the death of three women and a child. Similarly, in the same district of Pasaband, a man and a woman were swept away and later found dead, while another person is still missing. Over 100 households and almost 200 hectares of agricultural land were destroyed, with damaged canals that had been employed for irrigation purposes.

Speaking with AFP, Hamas said, “We don’t have more details of the financial losses for now.” It is worth noting that Afghanistan is one of the countries severely affected by climate change and considered to be experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters, according to aid agencies. A lot of research has been dedicated to deciphering the country’s extreme weather conditions.

In March, the World Food Programme stated that nine out of ten Afghan families cannot afford enough food. Since the Taliban regained power in 2021, there has been minimal foreign aid due to donor nations’ reluctance to deal with the Kabul administration. Moreover, NGOs and the UN have been facing restrictions from the Taliban government regarding employment opportunities for Afghan women carrying out vital aid work. Meanwhile, the global body has encountered difficulties securing cash donations.

In recent years, Ghor province has also been plagued by enduring drought.
