Five corps members who participated in the 2022 Batch B Stream 1 of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) are set to repeat their one-year national service in Bauchi. Meanwhile, ten corps members had their service years extended for three weeks to a month due to various misconducts during their service year, according to the Bauchi State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Rifkatu Yakubu.
During the collection of their certificates of national service, Mrs Rifkatu explained that the affected corps members were at fault for acts like absenteeism and truancy, leading to the consequence of repeating their service year. Mrs Rifkatu further emphasized that the National Youth Service Corps would continue to show zero-tolerance for truancy and various other offenses within its ranks, promising to impose severe punishments on defaulters.
In her address, Mrs Rifkatu cautioned outgoing corps members to avoid traveling at night and instead return home to their loved ones. She also advised them to make use of the entrepreneurial training they received during their service year, charging them to put their newly acquired skills into practice.
She said, “During your service year, at the end of the month, no matter how small, you know that alert will come in. But now that the service has come to an end, if you don’t involve yourself in doing something, honestly speaking, you will be demoralised in life.”
She encouraged the corps members to engage themselves in productive activities and use the skills learned to empower themselves and others, while also striving to avoid laziness and other vices.
The National Youth Service Corps is a scheme that mobilizes Nigerian graduates to serve their country for a year in different states of Nigeria to promote national integration and social development.
