In a formal ceremony on Thursday, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, swore in 39 additional judges to join the 307 judicial officers previously assigned to hear petitions stemming from the February 15 and March 18 general elections throughout Nigeria. The recent appointments bring the total number of judges assigned to the petitions to 346.

During the ceremony held at the Supreme Court, Justice Ariwoola emphasized the significance of the task before the newly appointed judges and cautioned them against succumbing to temptations or blackmail. He emphasized that the judges were chosen for their moral integrity and urged them to maintain the lofty standards upheld by the judiciary. He further noted that the judges must keep in mind the weight of their oath to ensure that they discharge their duties in accordance with the sanctity of the rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution.

Justice Ariwoola also noted that the judges’ role was critical to ensuring lasting peace and lasting democratic governance. “You are enjoined to always strike a balance between justice and the rule of law as you embark on this critical national assignment,” he said.

He further encouraged the judges to maintain their sense of impartiality and warned them against sentiment or public opinion that could harm their judgment. He acknowledged that the judges would face various forms of temptation and blackmail but urged them to stay true to their oath, as it was an uncompromising witness between them and their creator.

In closing, he prayed for God to grant the tribunal judges the wisdom and courage to carry out their responsibility without faltering or failing. The assignment before the judges is an enormous national duty which will test their character, integrity, and sense of justice. The nation awaits the outcome of their work, which will have far-reaching implications for democratic governance in Nigeria.
