Rwandan Genocide Fugitive Kayishema Finally Captured

The Umbrella Organisation for Genocide Survivors’ Associations, Ibuka, has hailed the arrest of fugitive Fulgence Kayishema in South Africa. The ex-head of the Government’s judicial police is accused of organising and committing genocide in 1994, playing a key role in the killing of around 2,000 Tutsi adults, children, women and elderly people at the Nyange Catholic Church. Despite being on the run for almost 30 years, he had become adept at disguising himself, posing as a Burundian and a Malawian national and using numerous aliases to avoid detection and capture. Kayishema was finally arrested on May 25th and is expected to be returned to Rwanda to stand trial. Speaking on behalf of Ibuka, the Executive Secretary, Naphtal Ahishakiye, welcomed the news, saying it would bring comfort to the families of the victims.
