Outgoing Minister of Defence, Magashi, Claims Over 80% Success in Fight Against Boko Haram and Other Criminal Activities

Major General Barshi Magashi (rtd) said that the Nigerian armed forces, in the four years he served as minister of defence, have made significant progress in destroying Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgency, banditry, and other forms of criminality, achieving over 80 percent success. Speaking at a valedictory dinner organized by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Magashi stated that despite the security challenges the country has faced, the armed forces have been working tirelessly to maintain the security of Nigeria.

He further stated that in the period he served, the armed forces achieved about 70 to 80 percent success in their mission, and they will continue doing the same. Magashi expressed his belief that the president had provided them with all the tools necessary for them to perform their duties.

Magashi went on to commend the efforts of the Chief of Defence Staff, the service chiefs, and their team members stating that the achievements the ministry recorded, were through the synergy among them. According to him, teamwork was necessary for the success of the team.

Speaking about the outgoing Minister of Defence, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana applauded Magashi for providing leadership to the Armed Forces of Nigeria, as well as the ministry.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, and Lt.-Gen. Farooq Yahaya, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) also praised Magashi for the wisdom he exhibited and detail he used in leading the Armed Forces.

Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, praised Magashi for his resolute character and his pursuit of adherence to global best practices while ensuring due diligence during each operation.

Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, Chief of Air Staff hailed Magashi’s tenure as that of selfless service to the nation. He commended the upgrades and capacity building the Nigerian Air Force received during Magashi’s tenure, stating that it had greatly improved their operational engagements in their task of securing the nation.

In conclusion, the outgoing Minister of Defence expressed his appreciation to the President for realizing the need for synergy among the armed forces and other security agencies, which ultimately led to the achievements recorded in his ministry.
