The Nigerian Supreme Court has dismissed a suit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, and vice president-elect, Kashim Shettima, seeking their disqualification over alleged double nomination. The PDP had alleged that Shettima was nominated twice, as the senatorial candidate for Borno Central Senatorial District and the vice-presidential candidate under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his judgment, Justice Adamu Jauro, imposed a fine of N2m on the PDP for interfering in the internal affairs of the APC. He maintained that the PDP’s claim lacked merit and was aimed at deceiving the Court and the Public.
The court agreed with Tinubu’s lawyer that the PDP had no jurisdiction to institute the suit. Furthermore, the party could not provide any evidence to back up their claims of double nomination. The court described the move by the PDP as most unfortunate, unwarranted, and uncalled for.
The court held that PDP should focus on its affairs and not meddle in the internal affairs of the APC. It also warned against using social media to blackmail the court.
In conclusion, the Supreme Court reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and the protection of democracy in Nigeria. It urged all political parties to act within the ambit of the law and respect the independence of the Judiciary.
