The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has revealed that he already prepared his handover note in September 2022, thereby indicating that he would have stopped working as a minister before the end of the year. Fashola made this known during the contract signing ceremony for the value-added concession under the highways development and management initiative. The minister was reacting to the public uproar following President Buhari’s directive that all cabinet members should continue working in their various offices until May 29, 2023.
Fashola noted that some people are spreading false information about the government in order to unduly attack it. He opined that for Nigeria’s democracy to grow, there is a need for conversations on whether the government should stop work and allow the incoming administration to continue. The participants said “No” in response to Fashola’s suggestion of stopping work.
He lamented that despite the fact that he had already prepared a handover note in September 2022, new work kept coming up, making him unable to stop work. Even up until now, Fashola revealed that some individuals are still sending him messages to sign a Certificate of Occupancy.
In conclusion, it is essential for the government to streamline its activities and ensure continuity of governance, regardless of the transitions of administrations. It is required for the growth of Nigeria’s democracy.
