The Sokoto State government has finally cleared the late Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki of all allegations that prompted his deposition by the military regime of General Sani Abacha in 1996. This new development is contained in a white paper issued by the state government and based on the findings of an authorized committee.

The committee, led by the former Secretary to the Military Government and Head of Service, the late Muhammadu Jega, carried out a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the government’s action against the late Sultan Dasuki. Based on their comprehensive study and analysis, the committee concluded that there was no evidence to support any incriminating acts that would justify his deposition. Additionally, the committee highlighted the denial of the Sultan’s right to defend himself, as required by the laws of the land.

The State Commissioner for Information, Akibu Dalhatu, and the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Suleiman Usman SAN disclosed that the white paper adopted the committee’s recommendation. Moreover, the state government has approved the payment of all entitlements due to the late Sultan Dasuki in accordance with laws pertaining to such benefits.

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal approved the white paper during the State Executive Council’s sitting on May 25, 2023. This action demonstrates empathy and recognition for the late Sultan who served as the 18th Sultan of Sokoto. The announcement has brought widespread relief and satisfaction to the people of Sokoto who closely followed the developments of the case.

Sultan Dasuki’s supporters, who maintained his innocence, feel that their unwavering faith in his character and integrity has been unequivocally justified. The news of his exoneration is reverberating throughout the state, bringing a renewed sense of hope and closure to his family and well-wishers. The government’s commitment to securing his legacy and addressing the suffering endured by his loved ones through the provision of long-overdue benefits is seen as a significant step towards healing and reconciliation.

Sultan Dasuki, who passed away in November 2016 at the age of 92, will be remembered for his contributions to Nigeria’s development, particularly after serving as the 18th Sultan of Sokoto. His exoneration in the white paper issued by the Sokoto State government is a crucial turning point that would significantly improve his legacy, and the benefits approved for his family would ease their suffering.
