President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his continued grief over the plight of children being held in captivity in Nigeria.
In his farewell broadcast ahead of the May 29th handover to the incoming government, President Buhari stated that security agencies in the country were working tirelessly to secure the release of these children.
The President, who assumed office in 2015 and was re-elected in 2019, will be handing over power to the newly elected President-elect, Bola Tinubu on Monday.
Buhari lamented the senseless brigandage and carnage that families and friends of victims of these abductions have been forced to bear.
He pledged that the government was taking the issue of security seriously and would do everything in its power to ensure that Nigerians could go about their daily activities without fear.
“For all those under unlawful captivity, our security agencies are working round the clock to secure their release unharmed,” Buhari said.
The President’s comments come in the wake of rising cases of abductions and kidnappings for ransom in the country.
Many Nigerian families have been left devastated by the situations, with reports of torture, sexual abuse, and killings.
President Buhari has often been criticized for his administration’s handling of insecurity in the country, with many calling for a more proactive approach to the issue.
However, the President has made assurances in his farewell speech that his government is doing everything it can to bring an end to the situation.
