The family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, have distanced themselves from alleged plans to disrupt the inauguration of the new administration in Abia State, as well as others across the country, on May 29th. The family released a statement saying that some “disgruntled elements” were planning to cause disorder across the East in the name of the family and the IPOB group. The group has denied all involvement in any such plans and condemned any actions that might undermine peace.

Prince Emmanuel Kanu, who spoke to Vanguard, stated that anyone linking the family or IPOB with these plots is being “mischievous” and is attempting to blackmail the family and the broader movement. He commented, “We are not part of it. Anybody behind such a plot should count us out of it. We are not involved and we discourage such. Those doing such things are the real enemies of our people”.

The Kanu family representative stated that both the family and IPOB believe in peace and will continue to promote peace. They emphasised that their primary goal is to secure the release of Kanu, not to disrupt the inauguration or cause disorder. The family urged the public to disregard any rumours or social media reports associating them or IPOB with any subversive act related to the May 29th inauguration.

This statement comes at a time of heightened tension and concern in Nigeria, particularly in the East. IPOB support has grown quickly in recent months, as the group continues to push for a Biafran state, calling for a boycott of elections and threatening to disrupt Monday’s swearing in of new governors if certain conditions are not met. It is hoped that Kanu’s family’s condemnation of any disruptive actions may weaken IPOB’s call for boycotts and violence and promote peace.
